<p>Are Healthy Fats A Helpful Bodybuilding Diet Nutrient For Muscle Gain?</p>
<p>The popularity increase of the health industry in recent years has spawned research in natural nutrients that can enhance health and well being, with one of the most widely advertised being Essential Fatty Acids (EFA), which are healthy fat sources that have been shown to reduce cholesterol, boost immune system function,<span id="more-58"></span> and aid in sustaining normal body function (such as clear skin). Because of this, these Essential Fatty Acids have become popular in the diets of many, and have even captured the attention of the bodybuilding community as a method of providing energy while improving long term health.</p>
<p>But can fat actually assist in muscle building? This is a question many bodybuilders are asking, especially considering how some have proclaimed that a group of fat sources can assist in hormone increase, and will therefore boost muscle building when integrated properly within a bodybuilding diet routine. This idea has especially grabbed the attention of many bodybuilders who have developed a negative view of carbohydrates due to having gained a large amount of body fat on standard carbohydrate focused muscle building diet routines. </p>
<p>I do not doubt the positive health impact offered by EFA sources, and do recommend using these as part of any diet routine, even for those who do not pursue bodybuilding, and therefore all should implement Essential Fatty Acids for immune system benefits. Yet, in relation to muscle gain, carbohydrates are far more helpful in growth as compared with fat, and therefore many who switch to a diet regimen which focuses on fat as the chosen energy source will find that muscle mass gains decline, sometimes dramatically. The negative stigma attached to carbohydrates which have made higher fat diets en vogue are not related to an inherent harm originating from carbohydrate sources (as raw honey and fruit, two examples of simple carbohydrates, are extraordinarily healthy), but instead due to improperly constructed diet routines which favor carbohydrates for a vast portion of total caloric intake, which causes body fat to increase far more quickly than expected. Instead of adjusting carbohydrates to a more effective macronutrient ratio in relation to protein and fat, many bodybuilders instead nearly reject car<br />

bohydrates outright, and find that their results suffer substantially as a result.</p>
<p>It has been said that saturated fat can play a role in hormone production, and consuming a small portion of total food intake from saturated fat is acceptable for those who do not suffer from any genetic predisposition towards or history of heart disease or cardiovascular dysfunction, but the potential harmful health side effects originating from large levels of saturated fat greatly exceeds any bodybuilding hormone related benefits, therefore of all foods consumed, saturated fat should comprise the lowest overall percentage. A bodybuilder who abstains from all forms of saturated fat can achieve amazing bodybuilding results, as I gained over 60 pounds of muscle mass while consuming a very small saturated fat level, and I do not feel that fat in general, including saturated, will provide a substantially positive impact on muscle building, but will derail progress if significant carbohydrates are abandoned in favor of added fat consumption.</p>
<p>A correctly constructed diet routine will center around a variety of nutrients for maximum health impact and muscle building progress, including carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats, with saturated fat consumed only in moderation (for those who are not predisposed to cardiovascular related medical issues), and when doing so, the downside of carbohydrates that disrupt the definition level of many bodybuilders will be averted, and muscles will receive a wide spectrum of nutrients for peak function, both in terms of defense against disease, and total muscle gained. </p>
<p>For those bodybuilders who currently integrate fat into their diet routine, make sure to abandon unhealthy forms of fat, such as trans fat, as these types of fats are destined to deposit themselves inside of blood vessels, producing life threatening cardiovascular difficulties. The majority of health issues experienced in western civilization are linked to poor behavior, including food selection, with harmful fat consumption reaching epidemic proportions due to the growing infatuation with fast food and boxed unperishable food items that utilize terrible additives. Yet, with so many delicious food choices available that are also extremely beneficial to muscle building and health, there is no worthwhile reason to design a diet plan based upon damaging foods, even when eating at a restaurant. Bodybuilding is not only a hobby based on maximum muscle building, but also involves enhancing long term health and well being, therefore choosing the proper types of foods is no less important than the weight lifting workout itself.</p>

<p>Improving Short Term Memory Through A Brain-healthy Diet</p>
<p>The old adage &#8220;You are what you eat&#8221; not only applies to the physical aspect of you, but mental as well. While there is plenty of talk about having a diet that is healthy for the body, there is a lot to say about having a diet healthy for the brain, Like the body, the brain is subject to a number of ailments and diseases, and<span id="more-56"></span> this includes things like memory loss, degenerative diseases and even more serious brain ailments like Alzheimer&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Keeping your brain hale and hearty is one of the largely significant things to make sure that you are running in tip top condition and this includes a whole laundry list of nutrients, supplements and vitamins you should be taking. This also includes things like the sort of food you should and should not be eating as some sorts of food combinations can be detrimental to certain brain functions. First things first, you must always eat your vegetables and there is a very important reason for this. </p>
<p>One of the latest developments from neuroscience states very clearly that vegetables is really, really good for you and there is a certain advice that will lead to the belief that eating an assortment of vegetables of every colour and form will give you a healthy brain. There are many recent studies showed that individuals that eat vegetables from a young age perform much better at memory and learning tests. And the more of the vegetables they ate, especially in the times leading up to the tests, the better they did perform. Having such a diet rich in these vegetables is good because it is packed with the sort of anti oxidants, minerals and vitamins, low in transfat and very low in calories.</p>
<p>So the next time you are out shopping for food, it is a good idea for you to get yourself a list of vegetables that are high in vitamins and minerals, and it is a good idea to purchase those leafy greens. Another thing you need to look at is Omega-3, which is a form of polyunsaturated fats that are found in fat fish, and these minerals show that Omega-3 are crucial in maintaining day to day brain functions especially in children early in their developmental stages of their life. It also helps to protect the brain from premature aging as well. </p>

<p>The most prescribed weight loss medications in the US are sympathomimetic appetite suppressants, the most popular<span id="more-55"></span> being Phentermine. These drugs work by stimulating the hypothalamus gland and affecting certain neurotransmitters to decrease appetite. The hypothalamus is a region of the brain responsible for controlling the autonomic nervous system, regulating sleep cycles, appetite and body temperature.</p>
<p>During the past many decades, a number of over the counter (OTC) diet pills have also been marketed to consumers. Increasingly popular today is the use of &#8216;herbal&#8217; diet pills and weight loss supplements. Although the FDA regulates how these products can be advertised, as well as how they should be used, many of these products contain ephedra, phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and other potentially harmful substances. Care must be exercised when considering any weight loss product, whether prescription or non prescription.</p>
<p>The FDA has a number of regulations about how diet pills can be advertised, how they can be prescribed, what conditions they can be prescribed for, dosage levels, drug combinations and length of use. When any drug is used contrary to these regulations, the term &#8220;off label use&#8221; is often applied. Those taking dieting medications should ensure that they are not using these pills in this manner, as this can have profound adverse reactions on health and the body, including blood pressure and metabolism. As well, those considering weight loss medications of any sort should be aware that these products are only designed to be effective when used in conjunction with proper diet and physical activity.</p>
<p>Always remember that just because a diet pill or medication does not require a prescription does not mean that it is safe. As well, the fact that a product is &#8216;natural&#8217; by no means guarantees that it is safe or effective. Always discuss these products prior to use with a doctor, as many ingredients can negatively interact with other medications and/or health conditions.</p>

<p>Alli diet pill was a prescription drug first made available in 1999. The pill was then marked as a xenical. However the FDA finally approved it as an over the counter medication as a pill to fight obesity. The weight loss pill works preventing the food getting tuned into fats and eventually reducing the calorie intake. </p>

<p>Why is that food processing and commerce are not strictly regulated by law so as to prevent health problems generated by an inadequate diet? Unhealthy products encourage an unhealthy diet, appealing the consumer by their availability within reach and the invading advertising. If the food producers are controlled by health officials, then it must be<span id="more-49"></span> that the regulations are too lax in as far as marketed foods are concerned.
<p>Everyone knows that, for instance, hydrogenated oils and partially hydrogenated oils are highly unhealthy. Tons of studies and informative material have been published, yet there is a population segment that still falls into traps saying that margarine is a &#8220;healthier alternative for butter, full of vitamins&#8221;, when in fact the trans-fatty acids it contains surpass the &#8220;healthy benefits&#8221; it offers. For this particular case, all foods containing hydrogentated oils (if the law allows their production, though it shouldn&#8217;t) should have a health hazard warning (like those on the cigarette packs), saying something like &#8220;This product contains trans-fatty acids that increase the risk of heart disease&#8221;. Thus, people would be constantly reminded of the bad effects of such products on health.</p>
<p>Generally, when it comes to foods and dieting, people should be advised of the potential inconvenience that might occur due to some ingredients or the way the food is prepared.</p>
<p>Take for instance the case of the release of so many diets that are not documented, not officially controlled and approved, promissing great things but not being explicit about the great problems they generate. Such as the very popular Atkins, for instance, which is a real danger to health.</p>
<p>I wondered why such anti-health practices are not forbidden? Oh, pardon me! Why should I wonder? It&#8217;s obvious: in an ever growing pragmatic course of events, the industrial interests have overpassed the interest for the health of people.</p>
<p>At this point, the role of the well-informed consumer is decisive for his own health. And if people are not fully convinced by so many scientific studies, informative articles and materials, then they surely become when finding out of the multitude of lawsuits against food producers (such as Kraft Foods Inc, the producers of Oreo cookies), fast food chains (McDonald&#8217;s) or promoters of diets (such as the Atkins diet).</p>
<p>The producers of the popular Oreo cookies, Kraft Foods Inc were sued in 2003 by the attorney Stephen Joseph, who based his accusations on a provision of the civil code of California saying that manufacturers are liable for products if the consumer is not advised of the products&#8217; unsafety. He rightfully claimed that the public was not aware of the high content of trans-fats in Oreos. He declared that he sued out of concern for the public health and that no money was requested in the lawsuit, which he finally withdrew, explaining that the publicity on this case had made people aware of the health risks enhanced by the product. Anyway, if the lawsuit was intented as bad publicity for the Oreos, the aim was not reached, as Kraft Foods Inc will continue to produce Oreos in a trans-fat free version.</p>
<p>Another famous case of litigation is the suit from 2002 against McDonald&#8217;s. The lawsuit was filed by the lawyer Samuel Hirsch on behalf of some obese children. The lawer sustained that the fast food producer mislead the consumers into believing that the products were healthy and safe and claimed that the children developed health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity because of eating McDonald&#8217;s products. The suit was dismissed on the grounds that no one is forced to eat at McDonald&#8217;s and that the law has not the role to moderate individuals&#8217; excesses.</p>
<p>A recent date &#8220;diet trial&#8221; is going on in Florida. The suit was filed by 53-year-old Jody Gorran against Atkins Nutritionals on May 26, 2004. The plaintiff claims that after going on Atkins diet his cholesterol level increased so much that he needed angioplasty in order to unblock an artery. In addition to financial damages, there is also the request that the company warns the public of the potential dangers of a diet favoring meats, cheeses and other high-fat proteins by labeling their products. The sequel is yet to come.</p>
<p>Even if some of these lawsuits started out of reasons beyond humanitarian, (as for instance the chase for money from damages that such important companies would pay) they have a positive result, namely, the publicity around such cases arises questionning, gives people the idea of doubt, the &#8220;assumption of guilt&#8221;.</p>
